Description

So it's finished (I think). Jaina is set upon by Diablo and has to think fast. This has taken me an insanely long time, but I figured if I am going to enter a contest I may as well at least TRY and win it.

Hand painted in Photoshop cc using pressure sensitive tablet and standard brushes.

Thanks for looking.

(I wanted to leave my thoughts here. this caugth my attention ages ago, and I still find it enaging.)

VISION: 4/5

I can definitely see what your intentions were with this piece. I can feel the aciton. The panic of being set upon from behind. It definitely feel slike I'm inside the moment. There's just a few thoughts shared below that keep it from feeling entirely finished.

ORGINALITY: 5/5

I quite like how the smoke, fire, and shading choices mimick fire and reflection of flame. Those color choices definitely caugth me eye when I was scrolling through art. This piece tells a story, and I enjoy how you captured it.

TECNIQUE: (4/5)

Light/Contrast

It's unclear if the light is coming from the staff, the ceiling, or another source. I'd suggest lowering the contrast so we can see more of the details, and they don't seem so overblown. It's a bit hard to distinguish other things like shadows, b/c with the light coming from that angle I'd assume it's at least cast a shadow of Diablo, which isn't present here.

Background vs. Foreground

Something else that would help this piece is the perspective. The action is taking place in the foreground, so it'd help to make the background less detailed, pull the light back, and allow for the foreground to take shape with shadows and light. It's an action filled moment, so I feel that would help the viewer interpret the scene more clearly.

Pose

I acted this out, and I think another issue is that a staff is a two handed wepaon. Perhaps if he were at a quarter turn, instead of a half turn, with both hands on the weapon, we'd be seeing the scene from over his shoulder, and the lighting would make more sense.

IMPACT: 4/5

I defiintely love returning to this piece. For all the reasons stated above. If you ever re-create this piece there's a few things mentioned above that would make it even more cohesive.
